Il y a des jours où l'organisation d'une tournée s'apparente plus à la préparation d'une fête qu'à tout autre chose. Et croyez-moi nous sommes particulièrement attentives à ces instants enthousiasmants.

Agencer l'exposition des Clichés Ecossés dans un pub devient un jeu de puzzle exaltant; scénographier Lost in Scotland dans une église de l'Aberdeenshire par téléphone depuis Paris devient une véritable partie de plaisir. En France et en Ecosse, nos correspondants délégués visitent, mesurent, annotent, photographient et nous relaient dans les préparatifs. Grâce à eux, nous sommes maintenant en mesure de vous dire plus précisément ce qui vous attend les prochains mois.

There are some days when preparing for a tour seems more like organising a party than anything else. And believe me when I say that we've been paying particular attention to those exciting little moments. Planning the Clichés Ecossés exhibition for display in a pub is proving to be an intriguing puzzle, whilst trying to set up Lost In Scotland in a church hall in Aberdeenshire (by telephone from Paris, no less) has been nothing but fun. Our various representatives in both France and Scotland have been busy visiting, measuring, noting, photographing and relaying everything back to us as the planning process rumbles on. Thanks to them, we are now able to give you more precise details of what we have coming up over the next few months.

Elle pourrait être la prisonnière d’une carte postale écossaise, l'héroïne de Lost in Scotland -

représentant les deux auteures du livre dont est tiré le spectacle.

Elle aurait pu rester figée dans ses propres illusions comme Alice aurait pu l’être au pays des Merveilles.

Si ce n’est que l’Ecosse qui se crée tout autour d’elle, qui s’anime et se défend,

prend forme au-delà même de tout ce qu’elle avait imaginé.

 


The protagonist of Lost in Scotland

– an incarnation of the two authors of the book on which the play is based –

finds herself trapped in what could be a scene from a Scottish postcard.

A struggle to see beyond her own world of illusions,

a veritable Celtic Wonderland, leads to a confrontation between reality and imagination.
Watch as Scotland is created all around her, rising up and protecting its own,

as it takes on a form far beyond anything that our author could have imagined,

even in her wildest dreams.

" Il est des villes où deux mondes parallèles coexistent et ne se rencontrent jamais. Celui des monstres et celui des touristes.
C’est le cas d’Inverness, capitale des hautes terres d’Ecosse généralement considérée comme la pointe septentrionale du pays par ceux qui n’y ont jamais mis les pieds. Pour les autres curieux, elle est l’étape incontournable d’où l’on peut observer un monstre marin onduler régulièrement à la surface du Loch Ness.
Etrangement plus les touristes tentent d’approcher la bestiole, plus ils s’en éloignent. Non pas qu’à l’origine les monstres écossais soient particulièrement inaccessibles, mais plutôt parce que les estivants tombent immédiatement sous le charme de l’Ecosse, ce qui les protège de tout chose susceptible de perturber leur repos annuel. Bien entendu si les monstres pataugeaient gaiement aux côtés des bateaux-croisières et roucoulaient sous les douces caresses des enfants émerveillés, ils ne seraient plus du tout des monstres. Heureusement les monstres, et plus particulièrement les monstres marins, sont beaucoup plus malins qu’on aurait tendance à le penser. "

' There are some places where two parallel worlds coexist and never meet. The monster's world, and the tourists'.

This is true for Inverness, capital of the Scottish Highlands and generally considered as the most northern tip of the country by those who have never set foot there. For more curious strangers, it is the essential stop on their itinerary, from which they can watch the ripples made by an underwater monster on the surface of Loch Ness.

Curiously, the closer the tourists try to get to the animal, the greater the distance that sets them apart from it. Not that monsters are particularly inaccessible, but more because these summer visitors live on a strange and distant planet that protects them from anything that might disturb their annual rest. Luckily, monsters – and espeically underwater monsters – are a lot craftier than we might think. '

PREMIERES DES WEEK ENDS ECOSSES EN FRANCE
Après une année de travail passionné et ininterrompu entre la France et l'Ecosse, la sortie du livre et les premières de l'exposition et du spectacle Lost in Scotland (inspiré des Clichés Ecossés) ont enfin eu lieu le week end du 6 novembre en France. L'évènement s'est déroulé à Couternon en Bourgogne, région natale de Théo et moi.
La municipalité s'est jointe à nous pour faire de ce week end un évènement international puisqu'en plus de recevoir les membres finlandais, néozélandais, algérien et écossais de Theatraverse, nous avons accueilli des spectateurs espagnols, belges et allemands.

After a year of tireless work and no little effort, both in France and in Scotland, the book release and the premieres for the exhibition and the show "Lost in Scotland" (inspired by Clichés Ecossés) finally took place over the weekend of the 6th November in France. The location for such a momentous occasion was Couternon, in Bourgogne, the region where both Théo and I grew up. We joined forces with the municipal council to put on a weekend-long festival which really took on an international flavour: as well as the members of Theatraverse from Finland, New Zealand, Algeria and Scotland, we also welcomed visitors from all over Europe, including Spain, Belgium and Germany.




Alors pour tous ceux qui sont venus, pour ceux qui auraient souhaité être là et pour ceux qui assisteront aux prochains week ends, voici un petit aperçu de la première en France.

So, for all those who could attend, for all those who wanted to attend, and for all those who are going to attend the forthcoming events, here's a little look at what happened over the weekend.


Lost in Scotland

VENDREDI 6 NOVEMBRE
Lors du montage de l'exposition Théo et moi nous sommes improvisées "animatrices d'ateliers" puisque nous avons reçu les classes de CP, de CE1 et de CE2 de l'école de Couternon. Soixante dix petits loups se promenant dans le labyrinthe des photos encore entreposées sur le sol et avides de tout connaître de la fabrication d'un livre et de la création d'un spectacle. " Mais vous, vous l'avez vu le monstre du Loch Ness? C'est vrai que c'est une fille?", "He Madame pourquoi les comédiens ils parlent étranger?", " Maîtresse comment on dit Good bye en anglais?".
Et c'est sans transition aucune que l'on a ensuite ouvert la porte aux premiers spectateurs du vernissage.

Friday 6 November

As well as setting up the exhibition, Theo and I had a go as "tour-guides" as we took children from the CP, CE1 and CE2 classes (Primary three, four and five) from the local school in Coutnernon behind the scenes of the weekend's festival. Seventy little nippers accompanied us on a stroll through the labyrinth of photos still yet to be hung, and every one of them was excited to learn about the book and the play. "But did you see the Loch Ness monster? Is it true it's a girl?", "Hey, miss, why are the actors speaking a funny language?", "Miss, how do you say "goodbye" in english?". And then, with no pause for breath, the doors to the exhibition were thrown open and the first visitors began to arrive.

Un discours du maire et quelques verres de bière plus tard, Théo et moi découvrions pour la première fois le spectacle Lost in Scotland, au beau milieu des spectateurs hilares. Autant vous dire que pour nous, c'était Noël en avance tant on a aimé l'adaptation théâtrale du livre.

One speech from the mayor and one or two beers later, Théo and I sat down to watch the first performance of the show "Lost in Scotland", surrounded by an audience in fits of laughter. Suffice to say, we thought that Christmas had come early so good was the theatrical adaptation of our book.

SAMEDI 7 NOVEMBRE
A chaque jour son ambiance. Le samedi après-midi c'est en chuchotant que les visiteurs entraient discrètement dans la salle de l'exposition. En face du cliché grand format des moutons highlandais, Joanne donnaient un atelier théâtre en bilingue

Saturday 7 November

It's never the same day twice. Saturday afternoon saw some very quiet visitors shuffle into the exhibition hall. And at the same time, under the gaze of a Highland sheep, looking down from its mounted frame, Joanne gave a bilingual theatre workshop.

Refugiés dans le coin bibliothèque François Olivi et Alex Maclachlan s'installaient pour la lecture publique d'un extrait du livre, l'histoire de la distillerie de Bruichladdich. Et le spectacle s'est peu à peu déplacé, des saynètes des élèves de l'atelier à la performance des deux lecteurs français et écossais. Et les spectateurs se sont déplacés aussi, slalomant à travers les cartes postale d'Edimbourg et l'atelier des livres d'artiste.

Holed up in the library corner of the exhibition, François Olivi and Alex Maclachlan gave a public reading of an extract from the book: the story of the Bruichladdich distillery. It really was an afternoon of theatre, from the sketches produced by the workshop participants to the performances of the two readers from France and Scotland. And the visitors continued to slalom their way through the exhibition, taking in the postcards of Edinburgh and the artist's book workshop.

Après quoi et parce que deux fois valent mieux qu'une, Théo et moi sommes retournées chercher des places au premier rang pour revoir notre cadeau de Noël théâtral.

After that, and because you can never get enough a good thing, Théo and I returned to the front row of the stalls for another playing of our early Christmas present.

DIMANCHE 8 NOVEMBRE
Il y a touours un peu plus étranges que les autres. J'ai vécu une semaine en quelques heures puisqu'il m'aura fallu accompagner ma mère à l'aéroport de Lyon où arrivait Sheila, notre caller préférée.
 Après un vol Edimbourg-Londres, une nuit à l'hôtel, un autre vol Londres-Lyon et la perte de ses bagages qui étaient restés en Ecosse, Sheila arrive joyeuse et souriante ... les mains dans les poches !
Encore deux heures de route, la découverte du spectacle et quinze minutes de répétition dans la cuisine avec le musicien du bal (lesquels ne se connaissaient absolument pas avant ce jour bien entendu) et la voilà prête à prendre le micro, pour expliquer aux français les pas des danses écossaises.

Sunday 8 November

Curiouser and curiouser. On Sunday, it felt like a whole week passed in just a few hours; you see, I accompanied my mother down to Lyon to pick Sheila, our favourite caller, up from the airport. After a flight from Edinburgh to London, a night in a hotel, and lost baggage (her suitcase had actually remained in Scotland), Sheila arrived happy and smiling... with her hands in her pockets! Another two hours on the road, a seat in the front row for the show, and fifteen minutes spent rehearsing in the kitchen with the musician (obviously, the two had never met before that afternoon), and Sheila was ready to take the mic and show all the Frenchies how they ceilidh in Scotland.

La fin d'une chose étant toujours le début d'une autre, nous préparons d'ores et déjà les tournées des week ends Ecossés qui se dérouleront en avril (en Ile de France et en Bretagne), en Juin (en Ecosse).
Nous vous tiendrons au courant des dates très prochainement.
En attendant sachez que vous pouvez toujours commander des livres, des livrets d'artiste, des photos et des calligraphies (voir rubrique "boutique") et que la version anglaise, Scotching Scottish Clichés sortira le 2 décembre 2009.

The end of one thing is always the beginning of another: the final curtain has only just come down on our Scottish weekend, but we are already preparing for our next events which will take place in April (in Ile-de-France, Normandy and Brittany), in June (in Scotland), and in August (for the Edinburgh Fringe).
Of course, you will all be kept informed as to the exact dates of the upcoming events. In the meantime, don't forget that you can still order the books, the special artist's books, photos and calligraphy from the "Shop" section of the website. And the English version of Clichés Ecossés, Scotching Scottish Clichés, will be released on 2 December, 2009.
